SUNNY’S SPRING CHALLENGE honors plucky young Sunny, the lead character in four-time Emmy Award winner Judy Tate’s masterful new play SLASHES OF LIGHT. It takes place at an all-black parochial middle school in 1966 Chicago. Sunny – a precocious, talented, and effervescent young girl – befriends a new white history teacher who carries hidden scars from a painful past. Sunny’s relationships with her teacher, her best friend, and her middle school crush, create a curious quadrangle. Echoes of the Holocaust intersect with the final throes of the civil rights movement in this coming-of-age story.
Civic Ensemble is honored to help bring the upcoming World Premiere Production of SLASHES OF LIGHT to Ithaca, New York: June 11-29 – being presented as a joint project with the Kitchen Theatre Company, and directed by Melissa Maxwell. Click here for tickets and info.
